Registration runs through the testing organization after your board authorizes you, a new authorization is required for each attempt, and the wait between attempts is measured in months rather than weeks — which is worth knowing before you book a date you are not ready for. Your board’s page and the association’s are the authority on the current shape, the fee and the windows.
Systemic practice is the heaviest domain, and it is the one a general clinical bank teaches worst. Almost a quarter of this examination is about seeing a system rather than a client — circular causality, structure, hierarchy, boundaries, the difference between a symptom and its function in a family. A bank assembled from general counseling material can cover the ethics and the crisis content perfectly well and still leave you short here, because it was never organized around relationships in the first place.
Drawn, not described
Three generations, the relationships between them, and the questions that follow — which is a reading skill, and a static diagram in a chapter cannot build it.
A new family each time, with the structural and relational notation the exams use. You learn to read the conventions rather than to remember one family somebody drew in a textbook.
Repeating patterns across generations, cutoffs and triangles, coalitions across a hierarchy, and the boundary that is the actual presenting problem. Named, and asked about.
The family in its context — school, work, faith, benefits, the extended network — because a system does not stop at the household, and neither does the exam.
No real client’s history appears in this product and there is nowhere in it to enter one. That is a design decision rather than a policy, and in this profession it is the first thing anyone thinks to ask.
The BBS route
Two of them, at two different points in your associate years — and the first one comes back every year until you pass it.
First, and annually
75 questions in 90 minutes, of which 50 are scored, split roughly 40 percent law and 60 percent ethics. Every associate takes it — social work, marriage and family, and professional clinical counseling alike — and retakes it each year until it is passed. The fee was cut to $75 from July 2026 through June 2030, which in practice means more attempts and more preparation rather than fewer.
At the end
California’s own clinical examination for marriage and family therapists, taken after the supervised hours. Its fee was halved to $125 over the same period. Clinical social workers in California sit the national social work clinical examination instead, and professional clinical counselors sit the national clinical mental health case examination — all three routes start with the same Law and Ethics Exam.
The 40/60 split is the thing to plan around. Most candidates prepare for this as an ethics exam and are surprised by how much of it is statute and regulation — the practice act, the record-keeping rules, the reporting obligations, the specific numbers. Both halves are here, and every item names the code standard or the code section it derives from, so you can tell which of the two you are actually weak on.
Practiced on invented cases
Fourteen percent of this examination, and the material where a study product has to be clearest about what it is and is not.
You can practice the assessment sequence, the duty questions and when they shift, the reporting obligations, and how a safety plan is built — on synthesized families, with the standard or statute behind each step named. What you cannot do here is get help for a real person, and the product will not blur that line anywhere.
